MANITOWOC, Wis. — The Holy Family College art department presents the exhibit, “With the Grain” by Bob Flemming now through Oct. 17 in the Lake’s Edge Gallery in the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance on campus, 2406 S. Alverno Road.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
“Wood as a medium, can be just that when the grain is read,” said Flemming. “It will speak (so to speak) to the observer. When I read a piece of wood, I allow myself to also be a medium for expression of what I imagine revealed by the grain. The less that is imposed with the burning of the wood, the more the honor of the grain is maintained, and yet, more imagination need not be denied to the observer to appreciate the grain. Be … ‘With the Grain.’”
“Drawing on wood provides the artist with a unique opportunity to integrate the natural world with images drawn from the human experience,” adds Dionne Landgraf, Holy Family College Art Department co-chair and associate professor of art. “In the work of Bob Fleming, we see the natural world integrated within the artist’s imagination. In this exhibition, the viewer is drawn to the natural beauty of wood while being drawing into the imagined world of the artist.”
Holy Family College gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
