MANITOWOC, Wis. — Silver Lake College Associate Professor of Art Erin LaBonte and members of her painting class are creating three colorful murals to brighten up the interior of Peter’s Pantry.

The supplemental food pantry serves Manitowoc County by distributing perishable and nonperishable food to those in need.

Silver Lake College students also are holding a collection of nonperishable canned and packaged foods through Nov. 22. Donation buckets are located at the Welcome Center and Clare Hall lobby on campus, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

The murals and food drive align with the college’s Franciscan values of caring for community and showing compassion for others, LaBonte said.

The two-week mural project came about when Peter’s Pantry approached LaBonte, who has been instrumental in creating a number of murals in the Manitowoc area. She decided it would be an educational and enjoyable experience for her students.

“My students visited the site and did some investigating into the mission of the pantry. We chose to make images that represent hope, community and growth,” LaBonte said.

“They wanted something inspirational on the walls so when people walk through, they feel a sense of hope,” said freshman Angela Kudick.

“It’s fun to be able to create something on such a large scale. It’s exciting to be able to work with a team to create images that make Peter’s Pantry a little bit brighter,” said sophomore Kaye Solander.

One mural depicts two hands holding a plant seedling. Another, inspired by the illustrations on banana boxes that line the pantry shelves, depicts the sun illuminating two hands joined together. The third is a painting of Peter’s Pantry logo.

The class will put the finishing touches on the murals next week.

The students started out by each submitting two designs. The class then critiqued the designs and students resubmitted their final versions two weeks later.  The class voted on the designs that looked the most professional and met the themes they had discussed in class, LaBonte said.

The board of directors and Woody Schulander, the manager of Peter’s Pantry, selected mural designs by Solander and freshman Michaela Klein.

Other students involved in the mural include: Guerson Choute, April Dabney, Kyle Fox, Elizabeth Kah, Evangelina Gonzalez, Matalie Koss, Tchepsen Noreus, Daysi Perez-Ramirez, Brianna Thetphasone and Allan Jaeger.

Hallman/Lindsay Paints, a supporter of the pantry, provided paint at a discount.
