Lakers vs Maranatha Baptist Bible College

Posted On January 17, 2014

Last night, behind a great defensive and rebounding effort, the men’s basketball team defeated the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders 56-50 in overtime. The Lakers worked hard to build up a 12 point lead just before the half. With 3 seconds left in the half, the Lakers stole an inbounds pass and Kyle Lundberg hit nothing but net from half-court to increase the half time lead to 15. In the second half, the Crusaders made a run chipping away at the lead. With 17 seconds left in regulation, the Crusaders hit a 3 point shot to tie the game at 47. The Lakers ran a play for the win which was not successful. The Lakers kept their composure during overtime never giving up the lead. The Lakers hit several key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. It was truly a team effort where everyone contributed and did the little things which never show up in the scorebook.

Darius Barnes, in addition to another monster dunk, had yet another double-double scoring 20 points and grabbing a game high 17 rebounds. John Duke played very well and registered a double-double of his own with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Chris Jones in addition to having a great game at the point, contributed 11 points and 4 assists. Kyle Lundberg added 8 points including his half-court buzzer beater and Javaughn Freeman added 3 points to the winning effort. I want to mention that Carl Jean, while he did not score, played an amazing game on defense and grabbed 4 rebounds. Austin Walker and Javaughn Freeman played very well off of the bench with Austin grabbing 2 rebounds and Javaughn hitting a key three point shot late in regulation and executing fouls which we had to give prior to the Crusaders entering the bonus at the end of the first half. Javaughn’s effort and perfect execution kept the Crusaders from running a play during the last 17 seconds of the half and led to the key steal and half-court shot by Kyle Lundberg.

It is clear that the Lakers are benefiting from their early season strong schedule. They are vastly improved and are “jelling” as a unit and are beginning to trust and believe in each other. The men’s team plays two games at home this weekend. On Saturday they will host Finlandia University at 3:00 pm and on Sunday they will host the “Sampson’s” from Gogebic Community College at 3:00 pm. Both games will be played at the UW Manitowoc Fieldhouse and will be preceded by the Lady Lakers games. Come on out and see four fantastic games this weekend and cheer your Lakers on to victory!
