MANITOWOC, Wis. -- Silver Lake College alumna Mary (Bolle) Mueller will sign copies of her recently published children’s book, “What Do You Call an Ant?”

The book signing will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 29 in the Zigmunt Library on the campus of her alma mater, 2406 S. Alverno Road.

Mueller’s book was chosen to be one of three presented in the children’s genre in Georgia at the 2017 Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) Decatur Book Festival, America’s largest independent book festival, and the fifth largest book festival in the country.

A secondary teacher who switched to waitressing so she could be a stay-at-home mom, Mueller has written for a number of publications. This is her first published book.

“I have had a life-long love affair with books,” Mueller said. “That love fueled the leap to write one.”

She confided that when she looked for books to read to her children she often was disappointed in their quality and in the story lines. “I still look for books that entertain, teach or inspire young minds,” Mueller said. “The only difference is that I used to do it for our children, now I do it for our grandchildren.”

The idea for this book came to her on a long car ride when her nephew asked, “What do you call a very tall ant?”  His question — the answer is giant — turned into a game to make the time pass more quickly.

The game, in turn, inspired her to write her book filled with creative riddles, word play and a surprise ending. The book teaches children about homonyms, and helps them build their vocabulary and spelling skills, she said.

Mueller, who graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social sciences, lives in Florida with her husband, John. He graduated from Silver Lake College in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration-management.

The book’s colorful and whimsical illustrations were created by Mueller’s sister, Sandra Reed of Mulliken, Michigan, who also attended Silver Lake College. The sisters grew up in Manitowoc.

Mueller’s book was published by Let’s Go! Press of Dallas, Texas. To find out more, follow this link: www.authormarymueller.com.
