SLC's new Fitness Center promotes healthy living

Posted On January 24, 2015

In keeping with its goal of nurturing the mind, body and spirit, Silver Lake College has opened a Fitness Center on campus for its students, faculty and staff.

The Fitness Center, completed earlier this month, was created in an existing 2,000-square-foot space in the lower level of the Main Hall.

“It’s more than just a space, more than just a room, more than just equipment,” said Dr. Chris Domes, college president. “It’s an opportunity for the college to focus on its mission of developing the whole person — mind, body and spirit. We are going to develop programs and opportunities for not only our students to stay fit and to focus on wellness, but also our faculty and staff.”

Members of the college community are looking forward to using the new facility.

“Personal fitness is something that’s very important to me,” said Jonathan Billingslea of Detroit, a junior majoring in accounting. “I drink a lot of water, I eat my vegetables and I’m excited to have an area where I can work out.”

Students, faculty and staff need only present a campus ID for admission.

Rubber safety mats, positioned on the floors beneath the exercise equipment, give slightly beneath your feet as you walk into the newly painted space, which is light and airy.

The rich blue floor of the main fitness room contrasts with the pure while walls, accented in black and a bright blue. Three large mirrors hang on the walls.

Two rooms house equipment, including four treadmills, one bicep machine, two elliptical machines, one triceps machine and a vertical bench. There also is a shoulder press, a lower back machine, a leg curl machine, a lat row machine, a stationary bike and a rowing machine.

Four flat-screen televisions will be positioned throughout the Fitness Center.

Separate men’s and women’s dressing rooms are conveniently located at the back.

Initially, hours are 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays.

The Fitness Center also includes a Studio Room, which will be available by reservation for exercise classes and group activities. That room is painted light blue, with a darker blue accent wall that features two large mirrors. A row of high windows allows for both natural light and privacy, as does a partial accent wall of frosted glass.

The Studio Room is ideal for activities such as yoga, Zumba, Jazzercise, dance and stretching exercises. A DVD player is available for viewing workout videos.

The Ruth St. John and John Dunham West Foundation Inc. provided a financial gift to cover renovation and equipment for the Silver Lake College Fitness Center.

The renovation was completed by Silver Lake College partner Sodexo, an international organization that delivers dining and facilities management for colleges and universities around the world. It handles facilities maintenance, landscaping and food service at SLC.

The new facility ties in with the SLC Dining Hall renovations, which also were handled by Sodexo.

Silver Lake College and Sodexo are committed to providing healthy food choices and offer diners information about the amounts of calories and fats in the foods they serve. Menu items and nutrition facts also can be located on the SLC website.

“That’s part of our responsibility as educators — to make sure we’re providing information for students about being healthy and creating a sense of wellness,” Domes said.

The Dining Hall feature a new food menu, complete with pasta, a deli line, soups, fresh fruit and salads, and hot, home-style entrées.

“Sodexo’s program is all about healthy eating and healthy living. Different healthy options are available daily at multiple food service locations,” said Chris Foresta, Sodexo’s general manager for campus services.
