MANITOWOC, Wis. — The Catholic Church fully welcomed into its fold Benjamin Karnitz, a student at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family.
Karnitz received the sacraments of first communion and confirmation to complete his full initiation into the church during Easter Vigil Mass at St. Francis Catholic Church-Waldo on the night of Saturday, March 31.
Karnitz, of Kewaunee, is a sophomore studying music with an emphasis on vocal performance and pedagogy.
“In the fall semester of 2017, Ben embarked on a journey toward more fully understanding and participating in the Roman Catholic Church when he began the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults at St. Francis Parish in Manitowoc,” said Shaun Johnson, who served as his guide and mentor during the process. Johnson is director of campus ministry at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family.
Karnitz took part in classes, conversations, and continual prayer and formation during the fall semester and into the spring semester.
“As Ben was received into the church, he was supported by many members of the Silver Lake College of the Holy Family community, who participated in the Easter liturgy and continue to hold him in prayer as he continues in his faith,” Johnson said.
“As his sponsor, I had the honor of standing behind him during the rite of initiation during the Easter Vigil Mass,” he said. “It was a beautiful Mass that marked the end of the Lenten journey and the beginning of the Easter season. It was also a beautiful new beginning for Ben.”
