The Silver Lake College women's volleyball picked up a pair of wins during the past week.
On Oct. 3, the Lakers rallied to defeat visiting UW-Marinette 20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19.
The Lakers were led by seniors Kaela Cheesman of Rolla, Mo. (16 digs), Megan Mendolla of De Pere (nine kills), Courtney Clavers of Brillion (nine kills, four aces) and Jordan Barbeau of Iron Mountain, Mich. (six kills, three aces); sophomore Danielle Byrum of Sheboygan (29 assists); and freshmen April Brunner of Manitowoc (17 digs, four aces) and Monica Martinez of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (six kills).
On Sept. 28, SLC swept host UW-Fond du Lac 25-17, 25-11, 25-16. Pacing the Lakers were Cheesman (14 digs), Barbeau (five kills, seven digs), Clavers (seven kills), Brunner (three aces, 17 digs) and Martinez (six kills).
On Oct. 2, SLC won the third set, 25-16, against visiting Gogebic Community College, but lost the other three sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21. SLC leaders were Cheesman (26 digs), Barbeau (12 digs, five kills, four aces), Clavers (13 kills, six solo blocks, six block assists), Byrum (30 assists), Brunner (18 digs) and Martinez (seven kills).
On Sept. 29, SLC won the first two sets, 25-17, 25-13, against Mount Mary in Milwaukee. But Mount Mary won the last three, 25-22, 25-21, 16-14. SLC leaders were Cheesman (28 digs), Clavers (11 kills), Barbeau (six kills), Byrum (28 assists), Brunner (19 digs) and Martinez (eight kills).
Matalie Koss, a freshman from Manitowoc, led SLC runners at the Warrior Invitational in Milwaukee on Oct. 3. She finished 64th in the women's 6K race with a personal-best time of 28 minutes, 24 seconds.
Teammate Ashley Joosten, a freshman from Wisconsin Rapids, placed 112th with a personal-best time of 34:27.
SLC freshman Elijah Stonebraker of Manitowoc finished the men's 8K race in 89th place in 33:10.
Nathan Eckley, a junior from Manitowoc, earned medalist honors for SLC, shooting a round of 94 at the season-ending Silver Lake Invitational, which was held Sept. 30 at The Golf Course at Branch River.
Also for SLC, junior Dru Harris of Appleton shot a 105 and sophomore Matt Groth of Racine shot a 117.
SLC freshman Nemanja Peric of Serbia scored four goals and had one assist, but the Lakers lost a high-scoring game, 11-8, at UW-Fond du Lac on Sept. 28,
Mateja Masic, a freshman from Serbia, added two goals for SLC, while teammates Frederman Mendoza and Joel Mejia, both freshmen from Miami, Fla., each added one goal and combined for three assists. David Martinez, a junior from Spain, had one assist for the Lakers.
SLC goalkeepers were senior Wesley Dowell of Ekron, Ky. (seven saves) and junior Luka Jovicic of Luxembourg (10 saves).
