The Silver Lake College men’s basketball team kicked off its season with a pair of games in Chicago this past weekend.
In Saturday’s game, held at St. Xavier University, SLC senior guard Austin Allen-Walker of Milwaukee scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, but the Lakers lost 63-59 to Lourdes University.
SLC led 32-21 at halftime, but it was hampered by 37 percent shooting (11-of-30) from the field in the second half.
Lakers junior center Stevens Alexis of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., added 11 points and two blocked shots, while senior guard Denzel Smith of Kenosha and sophomore guard Jordan Portee of Pontiac, S.C., each scored eight points and combined for six steals. Junior center Pat Zemanovic of Genesee pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
In Sunday’s game, SLC had three players score in double digits but the Lakers lost 85-63 to a St. Xavier team that received votes in the NAIA top 25 coaches’ preseason poll.
SLC led by three points with 13 minutes left in the second half before St. Xavier pulled away.
The Lakers were led by Smith (20 points, two steals), Alexis (16 points, eight rebounds), Portee (16 points) and Zemanovic (eight points).
