Program guide: HFC's Psychology major with Family Services minor

Posted By Valerie Grissom On October 05, 2017

Silver Lake College is dedicated to providing its students with the skills to pursue a variety of career paths in various fields, and HFC’s renowned faculty all work to prepare students for success upon graduation.

Keeping with these standards, HFC’S Bachelor of Arts in Psychology provides the information and tools needed to explore the integration between a person’s body and mind. The program allows students to develop an appreciation for the discipline as both a science and as an art.

As a science, psychology seeks to discover general principles of human behavior. As an art, psychology applies these principles to the individual.

Pursuing a Minor in Family Services Along with Your Psychology Major

HFC students pursuing this 36-credit psychology major have options when it comes to pairing their major with a minor. As part of HFC’s curriculum, students of the psychology program must take an “Intro to Family Studies” course. This course can help students decide whether or not they want to pair their psychology major with a minor in Family Services.

HFC’s Family Services minor is a great course of action to fulfill a well-rounded education in psychology. The minor teaches students how to understand and work with families. Students will learn how to handle family dynamics, relationships and decision making. The courses are approved by the state of Wisconsin to count toward the course requirements for Wisconsin's Social Work Training Certificate. This allows students or graduates the opportunity to pursue certification as an entry-level social worker in the state of Wisconsin.

Graduates with a family services education can consider these common career paths:

  • Child Care Consultant
  • Parent Educator
  • Job Coach
  • Homeless Shelter Advocate
  • Early Intervention Specialist
  • Foster Care

More Career Possibilities

If you are wondering what you can do with a degree in psychology, here are some common career paths graduates of a psychology major can consider:

  • Youth Counseling
  • Mental Health Services
  • Advocacy
  • Community Relations
  • Case Management
  • Non profit sector

HFC’s Internship Opportunities

Silver Lake College provides students with the opportunity to participate in internships. Internships require advisor approval and a completed learning agreement. Students also receive the benefit of learning beside quality instructors who have experience in the psychology work field. Instructors each have professional experience related to their teaching assignments, which allows them to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

What are some of the benefits of an internship?:

The student learns firsthand whether he/she is satisfied with his/her choice of major. The internship can help to build the student’s résumé and practical work experience. The student will have an opportunity to improve his/her professional and interpersonal skills in a work setting.

Student Eligibility

  • Must be of junior status (minimum of 60 earned academic credits) or senior
  • Permission of faculty advisor
  • Professional attitude
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0/4.0
  • Completed a FAFSA for the appropriate academic year

Delivery Options

Two formats, traditional delivery and adult accelerated delivery, are available to complete the program.

The traditional psychology major is 36 credits and is paired with a minor. In comparison, the adult accelerated delivery is a comprehensive, innovative, flexible, year-rounded program for adult learners. Prior to gaining admission, a student must have completed 45 college credits. The courses are offered at an accelerated format during the weekends and evenings. Courses can be taken in various locations throughout Wisconsin, but most are offered at HFC’s’ home campus in Manitowoc.

Silver Lake College takes its role as a stepping stone for students into successful post-collegiate careers seriously.
