A degree in the arts is not only an effective way to contribute to the perennial human need for beauty, but it also can pave the way for a successful career in a variety of emerging job fields.
Below, you’ll find out about our different art programs at Holy Family College, as well as the different career options that come with an art degree.
At-a-glance: Holy Family College’s Art Program
As a department, our goals are to help our students:
- Develop foundational skills while implementing design elements and principles using a variety of media
- Participate in dialogue and research regarding diverse cultures, ethnicities, art history, criticism and aesthetics, in order to creatively interpret and express ideas reflective of the global society
- Use critical thinking in synthesizing the knowledge and skills gained through a liberal arts education that fosters a commitment to Franciscan values, service and leadership
If you want to know how we accomplish these goals, take a look at our three major programs:
Think of Studio Art as the “classic” art major. You’ll study art history, theory and get lots of hands-on studio practice in drafting, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, etc. We also offer opportunities to visit and/or intern at museums and galleries, and you’ll have a chance to have your work featured in one of our professional gallery spaces during the senior art show.
Whether you decide to pursue a career in the fine arts right after graduation or have aspirations for grad school, the leadership and visual communication skills you learn in the Studio Art Program will prepare you well for a career in the field of art.
Graphic designers are more in demand now than ever before: from web developing to logo design, the job market is wide open to talented graphic design grads. In our state-of-the-art computer lab, you’ll learn design principles, history and professional practice, coupled with practical experience in the latest graphic design technologies. HFC offers opportunities for you to practice your design skills through services to the community, apply for graphic design internships and feature your work in the senior art show.
Whether you want to go to grad school or transition straight into full-time graphic design work, you’ll be prepared after attending classes in a small studio setting coupled with one-on-one guidance from our talented faculty.
If you love the arts and want to share that love with the world — particularly with elementary, middle school and high school students — HFC’s Art Education program might be a perfect fit for you. The Art Education Program prepares students to become certified elementary and secondary art educators — in Wisconsin and beyond.
As an art education major, you’ll not only get the opportunity to practice your artistic skills in the studio, you’ll also acquire skills in creative processes, critical thinking, curriculum design, and assessment while addressing state, national and district standards.
What can I do with that?
In addition to opening up your own art studio, there are a wide array of career options for art majors, including, but not limited to:
- Museum or gallery administration
- Commercial photography
- Graphic design
- Art director for magazines (print and online)
- Web design
- Logo design
- Marketing management
- Art education (pre-K-12th grade)
- Print design
... and that’s just our short list. With an art degree from Holy Family College, you’ll also be prepared for graduate school in the arts, which can lead to even more career opportunities and higher salaried positions.
